Reflections on the Progress of My GAME Plan...

I am taking a moment to reflect on my GAME plan that I created to assist me in my goal of integrating more technology into my teaching and the teaching of my colleagues in my school district. As a reminder, my Goals were: A. Model collaborative knowledge construction by engaging in learning with students, colleagues, and others in face-to-face and virtual environments B. Exhibit leadership by demonstrating a vision of technology infusion, participating in shared decision-making and community building, and developing the leadership and technology skills of others. For my first Goal, I have been looking for virtual field trips that would correlate with the enrichment units that I teach. I did locate one that I really like about Ellis Island that is through Scholastic and that would extend a Unit that we do on studying a country of the students’ ethnic origin. I found it at http://teacher.scholastic.com/activities/immigration/tour/ and have started to think of how exactly it would work in the unit. I have also been looking at http://www.internet4classrooms.com/vft.htm , a site that links to many other resources for Virtual Field trips. I am interested in the interactive trip into the Amazon Rainforest that is offered through http:// homeworkspot.com . For my second goal, I have started to put together a Powerpoint of some of the sites and resources that I have gained through my graduate classes and peers so that I can present it to my colleagues when we return to school in the fall. At this point, I do not have to modify my GAME plan. Some of the things could not be accomplished until the school year begins, and I have begun to implement the parts of the plan that I am able to do at home for preparation for the upcoming school year. I have learned that there are more virtual field trips and resources out there than I could have imagined. I have not used any previously, and I am glad that this is something that I have added to my teaching repertoire because I really think the students will gain a lot of knowledge from viewing them. As far as the Powerpoint of resources for my colleagues, I am trying to do some of the legwork and figuring out of sites so that I can present that information as well. I know that when I am told of a site, but then I go on and it is overwhelming and difficult to navigate, often I will tell myself that I will figure it out later, but I never do. I am trying to make it so that the resources are quick and easy to understand for my colleagues so that they are more likely to implement them. The part of my plan that I need to work on more is figuring out how I can effectively connect to teachers in other countries and states that would like to participate in a collaborative project. Do any of my Walden colleagues have any good sites or resources to share?

  1. Hi Maureen,

Have you ever heard of iEARN? It is a program for which a membership is necessary;however, it provides you with a variety of ways in which you can connect with teachers/ students in other countries. My district has a membership to iEARN, but I am sure that it is something that you could write a grant for as long as you had other colleagues that would be willing to participate. Check it out, and tell me what you think. My students and I have really enjoyed the iEARN projects that we have completed.

It sounds like your GAME Plan is really coming along. I commend you for all of your hard work and ambition. I am going into my third year of teaching, and I have become more and more offended when people say, "Teachers do not do anything in the summer and get paid." That is so far from the truth! Great post!

  2. Hannah,

I had never heard of iEarn before, but I have read your posts and understand that you have gotten a lot of educational use out of it. I would be interested in hearing what experiences you have had with some of the projects that you have completed through the program. I am sure that my district would not pay for another membership to any program, we are experiencing major cutbacks and they are talking about cutting personnel. One of my Goals of my GAME plan is to present to my colleagues about some of the resources that I have learned about through my classes at Walden. I will look into iEarn and see if it is something that I would like to add into my presentation to see if anyone would be interested in utilizing it to see if it would be worthwhile writing a grant. If you have the time to go into detail about any of the iEarn projects that you have completed, I would appreciate it. Thanks for the encouragement!

  3. Maureen,
Making resources easy to access is so important. There are so many thing out there these days that it makes it harder to plan lessons. I have so many different resources to sort through when planning that I usually end up going to the same things for the purpose of saving time in a busy schedule. I came across kidsites.com. It's a site where kids can search for thing and never have the worry of anything inappropriate coming up. It has reviews of the best sites for kids and links to get to them.

  4. Maureen,

I like that you are looking for virtual field trips and that you have already found some. I teach third grade, and we used the Ellis Island virtual field trip offered through Scholastic this past year. It was amazing how much understanding the students actually got from it. The audio clips and pictures really add to the experience for them. As we completed the activity we created concept maps to reflect on each step of Ellis Island as we went along. It helped engage the students and keep them focused.

I also like how much effort you are putting in to make it easy for your coworkers. I think that the easier we can make things for our peers, the more likely they are going to be to use it. Let's face it, with everything going on in the education world today there is not a lot of time to figure out difficult technology tools. Great job and good luck!
